F.A.I.L. No More (Part 4 of 4) -Limiting Beliefs

Shawn Sommerkamp • March 9, 2018

2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Thus far we have covered three of the four most prevalent internal blockers that stifle professional and career growth – Fear, Assumptions and Interpretations, the F, A and I in F.A.I.L.

Now it’s time to discuss the fourth and final internal blocker which would be Limiting Beliefs, the L in F.A.I.L.

What is a Limiting Belief?

A Limiting Belief is something you accept about life that limits you in some way. Here are just a few examples:

  • I grew up as an orphan and therefore will never have the same opportunities others have
  • If I don’t get this promotion I will have no other options
  • One big mistake could ruin my career
  • If I assertively pursue advancement I will be viewed as a suck up
  • I have never been able to _______ so there’s no way I can start now
  • I’m a woman and a woman can never become president
  • I’m too old to start a new career
  • …the list is endless

This is one of the best reasons to hire a professional Christian Executive Coach. A coach will ask you questions that get down to what you really believe about yourself and your career potential. A coach is trained to quickly identify Limiting Beliefs (not to mention Fear, Assumptions and Interpretations) and can quickly help you remove this roadblock that has kept you from getting into the fast lane.

“I discovered it wasn’t a matter of physical strength, but of psychological strength. The conquest lay within my own mind to penetrate those barriers of self-imposed limitations and get through to that good stuff—the stuff called potential, 90 percent of which we rarely use.”

- Sharon Wood, first North American woman to climb Mt. Everest, 1986

As Christians, we have some severe limiting beliefs that have kept many of us from experiencing a financial rewarding and wonderfully successful careers:

Limiting Belief

Truth

Money is evil

Love of money is evil

Career & Ministry can’t coexist

Your workplace is your ministry

I’ll be too busy to help people

You will be able to help 10x more

Great business leaders are ruthless

The best leaders are servant leaders

Success requires dishonesty

Daniel, Joseph, Abraham, Job, David

I won’t have time for God

Commit every success to God

Psalm 119:45 I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts

This may be one of the toughest blockers to remove on your own. It requires diligence and disciplined journaling. It is important to see, by writing it on paper or typing into a journal, exactly what beliefs you have about your own career.

Consider an executive coach as a powerful next step in conquering this fourth and final internal blocker. The investment you make will reap a bounty of return.

Hollywood depicts all Christians as judgy. It's a standard movie trope that lazy writers continue to use. The truth, however, is this: All people are judgy. Okay, that's probably not that hard to believe. The psychology behind this is very interesting, however. The scripture that guides us away from judginess is pertinent. Watch this video to find out how we can all avoid being judgy in the workplace.

Christians want to help. It's part of our DNA. If we see someone not doing well in their work, we invest time to get them back on track. Psychology tells us, however, we can't help those who don't want it. We see this same wisdom in Jesus as well. He kept walking and called others to follow Him, no matter their situation. And yet statistics show that a whopping 26% of a manager's day is spent on under-performing employees. Watch this video to learn the psychological and benefical wisdom of knowing when someone wants help and when they don't

It's very tempting to take credit when things go great in our career. We can easily get pleased with ourselves. And yet, when we pause and consider how the success happened, it's impossible (yes, truly impossible) to explain how exactly it happened. That's because success comes from the Lord. Our career can be a big part of our spiritual act of worship when we choose to vocally give Him the credit. Watch to find out more.

I am convinced there is no better training ground for Christ than our professional lives. We spend more time at work than anywhere else in our lifetime. And yet, how often do we consider how to take what we have learned in the marketplace and leverage it in God's church. What this video to explore a storefront of ideas to consider when using your talents for the Kingdom of God.

Many Christians have a tough time pinpointing exactly what it means to worship God. Sometimes we reference our Sunday morning music ministry or those times we pray in a humble poisition. But we aren't really certain. That means we may also not be so good at determining whether we worship other things or not. Watch this short video to find out what it means to worship and why it's so improtant that we understand it.
